CAMA’I VISITOR PROGRAM
AUTHENTIC COMMUNITY EXPERIENCES
Cama’i (pronounced chuh-my) is a traditional Yugtun and Sugstun greeting meaning WELCOME, and it perfectly reflects the spirit of our Cama’i Visitor Program. This initiative invites guests into deeper engagement with the people, stories, and traditions of Bristol Bay. More than just a museum visit, the program creates opportunities for authentic cultural exchange—welcoming visitors to learn about history and connect with it through conversation and community.
As part of the Cama’i Visitor Program, participants take part in guided tours of our museum exhibits, local landmarks, and the surrounding landscape that shapes life in our region. A popular format for visiting groups includes roundtable discussions and pop-up talks with local tradition bearers, culture keepers, historians, and individuals working in the regional seafood industry. These gatherings explore topics such as Indigenous lifeways, the evolution of the salmon fishery, environmental stewardship, and the dynamic history of maritime life in Bristol Bay. Set within the walls of our historic building, these conversations are grounded in place and made more meaningful by the lived experiences of those who call this region home.
The Cama’i Visitor Program is offered on a seasonal basis and is open to tourists, community members, and visiting groups by appointment. We encourage those interested to contact the museum in advance to learn about upcoming sessions and opportunities for participation. Whether you’re a lifelong Alaskan or a first-time visitor, this program offers a meaningful way to engage with Bristol Bay’s past, present, and future—one conversation at a time.
